Ulcerative colitis is characterized by diarrhea, rectal bleeding and abdominal cramps. This can in turn lead to constant fever, weight loss and fatigue. For those who are suffering from ulcerative colitis for a long time are at risk of having bowel cancer. There are anti-inflammatory medications and antibiotics that can treat the symptoms. Some of the medications do have side effects so it is advisable to only use them in severe cases, or flare ups. Surgery is necessary for those who are not responding to medications.
