There are two types of hipaa compliant medical billing software out there. First, there’s desktop software (which only runs of the computers it is installed in). The upside is that someone must be on that physical computer to access information, raising security. The downside is that someone must be on that physical computer to access information, lowering flexibility. Meanwhile, web-based hipaa compliant medical billing software can be accessed on any computer (as it runs of the server it resides on). This allows providers to access data from any computer in the world. However, it also lets hackers do the same.
